A Carolina wren on a branch of yellow jessamine and a palmetto tree against an outline of the state is accompanied with the state's name ("SOUTH CAROLINA"), the date of its admission into Union ("1788"), its nickname ("THE PALMETTO STATE") and the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM"
