Obverse

In the center, the national shield in sculptural relief surrounded with the legend "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS". Surrounding it and following the outline of the frame, the reproduction of different shields used throughout the history of our country, as well as the eagle found in the central part of the first page of the Mendocino Codex. Reverse

A scene showing the image of a river crocodile, above it the number "2000" and to its left, on a line spacing that starts from the vertical axis to the left, the "$" sign and then the number "5". In the lower part the symbol of the Mexican Mint. At upper right quadrant the inscription "CROCODILE DE RIO". In the lower right quadrant the legend "ANIMALS IN DANGER OF EXTINCTION IN MEXICO". In the upper left quadrant the scientific name of the species (Crocodylus acutus).
