Obverse

In the center, the national shield in sculptural relief surrounded with the legend "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS". Surrounding it and following the outline of the frame, the reproduction of different shields used throughout the history of our country, as well as the eagle found in the central part of the first page of the Mendocino Codex. Reverse

A scene showing the image of a manatee, followed by the "$" sign and a continuation of the number "5" on a line spacing that starts from the vertical axis to the right, to its left the symbol of the Mint of Mexico and at the bottom the number "2001". In the quadrant upper left the inscription "MANATI". In the lower left quadrant the legend "ANIMALS IN DANGER OF EXTINCTION IN MEXICO. "In the upper right quadrant the scientific name of the species (Tríchechus manatus).
