Description
10 Réis - Maria II from Madeira Islands. Issued from 1842 to 1852. Struck in Copper. Measures 33 mm and weighs 12.8 g.
- Obverse
- Portuguese coat of arms (royal crown at top, shield within shield below, scrolls either side). Lettering surrounding. The outer shield contains seven castles. The inner shield contains five smaller shields arranged in the form of a cross; in each of these, in turn, are five pellets. (Maria II, By Grace of God, queen of Portugal and Algarve.)
- Reverse
- Large X in centre, grape-vine wreath either side, date at bottom. Lettering surrounding NOTE: The X is Latin for 10 denomination, the lettering is Latin for 'Madeira's money' (Money of Madeira 10)
