Description
1 Penny from Lower Canada. Issued in 1837. Struck in Copper. Measures 34.1 mm and weighs 19 g.
- Obverse
- The bank's coat of arms. This coin is a mistake: the dies were incorrectly mated, and instead of using the bank's coat of arms with "Bank of Montreal" and bearing the date "1842", they used the coat of arms inscribed with "City Bank" and the date "1837". These coins were minted by Boulton & Watt. These coins are much rarer. There is also a contemporary re-strike of this coin, made by Taylor.
