- Georgina Pope and women portraits. In 1899, Georgina Pope was one of four female volunteer nurses who traveled to South Africa to aid British troops fighting the Boer War. She was given the rank of Lieutenant and paid a salary and was a significant player in the road to allowing women to participate in the Canadian Armed Forces as they do today.
