Description
Drachm from Sasanian Empire. Issued from 388 to 399. Struck in Silver (.900). Measures 22 mm and weighs 3.43 g.
- Obverse
- A portrait of the king facing right. His crown takes the form of a close-fitting headdress with one tooth, wingsand globe. The ends of the wingsare turned up. Ribbons flow from the diadem and crown. The crown's globe has a pointed rim. Ribbons flow from the hair with theri ends upwards. Around the king's neck is a necklace of one row of beads. Two ribbons fall from his right shoulder with the ends upwards. There is a single pointed rim around the picture. Pahalavi legend (Mazda worshipper, the Lord (divine) king Varhran)
- Reverse
- An atasdan with two attendants facing altar. The figures wear the headdress of Varhran IV and have swords in their hands. There is a tounge of flame above the capitellum. The capitellum is covered with ribbons. Pahalavi legend (Fire/fire-altar of Varhran)
