Description

Drachm from Sasanian Empire. Issued from 388 to 399. Struck in Silver (.900). Measures 22 mm and weighs 3.43 g.

Obverse
A portrait of the king facing right. His crown takes the form of a close-fitting headdress with one tooth, wingsand globe. The ends of the wingsare turned up. Ribbons flow from the diadem and crown. The crown's globe has a pointed rim. Ribbons flow from the hair with theri ends upwards. Around the king's neck is a necklace of one row of beads. Two ribbons fall from his right shoulder with the ends upwards. There is a single pointed rim around the picture. Pahalavi legend (Mazda worshipper, the Lord (divine) king Varhran)
Reverse
An atasdan with two attendants facing altar. The figures wear the headdress of Varhran IV and have swords in their hands. There is a tounge of flame above the capitellum. The capitellum is covered with ribbons. Pahalavi legend (Fire/fire-altar of Varhran)
