Description
Aspron Trachy from Byzantine Empire. Issued from 1187 to 1191. Struck in Billon. Measures 34 mm and weighs 3.9 g.
- Obverse
- Virgin nimbate, seated on throne without back, wearing pallium and maphorium, head of Christ on breast, beardless and nimbate. Inscription on either side of shoulders; beaded border.
- Reverse
- Isaac on the left, standing facing, crowned with stemma, wearing divitision and chlamys, holding akakia with right hand; St George on right, standing facing, beardless, nimbate, in military attire, holding sword with left hand; between them, both jointly holding a patriarchal cross on long shaft set on globe at base. Inscriptions on either side; beaded border. (Isaakios Georgios: "Isaace [and] George".)
