- The obverse shows families coming to see planes take off, a true attraction at the time. A plane is already in the sky between the poppy and the cornflower whereas Geroges Guynemer’s SPAD is about to take off

- Geroges Guynemer’s SPAD flies overs a battlefield dominated by two Saint-Chamond tanks, representing how 1917 saw the first battles in which French tanks saw action. A doughboy is depicted in the foreground, representing the entry of the United States into the war.
