- The seal of the United States: the rays of light "piercing the clouds", a bald eagle with spread wings holding an olive branch and thirteen arrows in the other. The whole symbolizes peace as well as defense against war. The bird is surmounted by thirteen stars reminiscent of the original thirteen states. .
