- Fourth crowned portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II right, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, legend around, date below.
- Reverse
- The realm of the Māori deity Tangaroa (guardian of the oceans and waters) is depicted in the style of a traditional pūhoro design. A whale is central to this design because of the belief that the whale is a descendant of Tangaroa and on whose back the ancestors of the Māori could safely reach New Zealand. Whales are therefore considered the protectors of sailors. The waves around the whale contain various other sea creatures. (Kohati tara is "One dollar" in Māori.)
