At the center, the coat of arms of Pope Francis : the blue shield crowned by the mitre between gold and silver crossed keys, bearing a radiant sun, carrying the letters IHS in red (H surmounted by a cross) and three black nails ; an eight-pointed star (tribute paid to Saint Joseph) and a nard flower (tribute paid to the Virgin Mary) beneath the sun ; all around, the legend FRANCISCUS PP. ANNO XI (which translation can be POPE FRANCIS, YEAR 2023 OF THE LORD) / MMXXIII (2023) ; in the lower part, a banner with the motto MISERANDO ATQUE ELIGENDO (in English BY HAVING MERCY, BY CHOOSING HIM) and the signatures of the artist sculptor Mariangela Crisciotti and the artist engraver Maria Angela Cassol
